Talkin with the Tech

Hello fellow TechNinja! You know those times when you are really trying your best to get things done on your old trusty computer and then out of nowhere good ole Murphy's Law intervenes and the next thing you know you are one second away from destroying your computer with extreme prejudice.  This can be very frustrating as we have all become more dependent on technology and it just bites when your computer isn't working.  Well I wanted to take this opportunity to give you these tips on how to communicate with your computer technician.  Now most work places where computers are used normally have a person or persons designated to help fix computer issues. To expedite the process of getting you back on task here are some things that you can do that will help your Tech help you.

  1. Get a grip on your emotions. When things don't work it is natural to get angry but this will only keep you from thinking clearly so calm down and try not to panic. The computer does not sense your emotional state and is not out to get you so please do not let that be the first thing the tech hears when explaining your problem.
  2. Check your cords and restart your computer before calling the tech.  This does not always work but you would be surprised at how many problems this will solve.
  3. Don't yell at the technician.  Most of the time it is not their fault that the computer is giving you greif.  Remember they are there to help.
  4. Try to be specific about your problem.  Simply stating that the computer doesn't work or threatening to throw it out the window will not help the tech get to the root of the problem.  Try to explain to the tech what you were trying to do when the problem occurred. If you can give specifics about error messages, noises, and the time issues occurred this will help the technician in getting to the source of the problem.
  5. Remember that every problem may not be able to be resolved in a short time period.  Some technicians are really good and may almost seem like that they have magic powers but on occasion even the best get stumped.
  6. Be optimistic. There is nothing worse that trying to fix a problem for a pessimist.
  7. Thank the technician after they help you (even if they didn't solve the problem) this will cultivate a good relationship with the people trying to help you.
Now these are just a few tips that I have found to be effective I am sure that there are many more.  Another thing to remember is the saying, " This too shall pass" tomorrow is a new day as we keep moving forward so when the gremlins come hang in there everything will be ok.
