Becoming a GOOGLE Ninja- Step Two Advertising Guru

If you can master Google, you are well on your way to becoming a tech ninja or at least impressing your friends.  Yesterday we discussed how to adjust your privacy settings in Google.  Today we will taking it one step further and find out how to change the Google target ad settings.  While Google is known mostly as a search engine, that is not where they make their money, they make it selling ads featured in their search results.  They have founds ways to target the ads directly to you and your interests, therefore making more money.  Now this is where the using your data in creepy ways comes in.  If you haven’t noticed, you may want to send an email to yourself using your Gmail account about going to a funeral and then look to see what ads your on the side of the screen in your Gmail next time you log in.
So step two in Becoming a GOOGLE Ninja is to adjust your targeted ad settings.  You can help Google make more money by letting them know what ads might interest you or opt out of targeted ads and receive random ads.  Go to https://google.com/ads/preferences/.  You are able to view and edit that information that Google uses to show your interest based ads on any website that is part of Google’s ad Network ( and there are a lot of them).  The interests that are show are stored in an advertising cookie that your browser stores.  This page will let you edit the categories that are associated with that cookie.   Check back tomorrow for Step Three of Becoming a GOOGLE Ninja.
