ACCESS

So in This weeks Tech Rumors- Ninja Style I mentioned Google Fiber.  Why this is so important is that because access to a high speed Internet is more important than ever.  But it is an important tool for students as well.  I don’t know about all school districts, but I know many let teachers take up laptops and other devices to plan their lessons and practice the content that they are using in their classrooms.  I feel that far too few districts and schools are letting the students take home the devices to use and practice their skills.
Yes, they cost money, but so do textbooks and the students take them home.  It will work perfectly and nothing will ever get stolen or broken, no, but the reward is so much greater than any of the problems that may arise.  But schools have to go further, they need to provide access.  Hotspots, long-range wireless networks, helping communities get wired, whatever it takes.  The inequity between those who have access and those who do not is what is holding many students back.
I am not saying that access alone is the reason for the achievement gap, it is a reason and the schools need to be the one to step up and change that and while that isn’t necessarily their job, it should be their duty.
